Carbide snow plow edges are used on the front, underbody, and wing of a snow plow. Carbide plow blades look very similar to traditional steel cutting edges; however, they have a carbide insert brazed into the thickness of the steel or overlayed on the face along the bottom of the blade. Carbide is short for Tungsten Carbide; a metal composed of equal parts tungsten and carbon. Carbide is denser than steel enabling it to be a versatile and durable edge material that provides much better wear resistance properties than a cutting edge made of just steel.
These blades are made of steel with a carbide insert or overlay. This style of blade is designed for extended product life compared to standard steel plow edges. There are a wide variety of carbide insert styles that can be paired with the three main types of snow plow mounts (front, underbody, and wing). For best performance, the blade should be matched with the appropriate mounting application. An underbody blade should have a top bevel, whereas front mount and wing blades should be unbeveled square edges.
The standard is a flat, 3/4″ thick metal blade with a single carbide insert brazed onto the face. The carbide provides an excellent balance of abrasion resistance and impact protection that cuts ice and compacted snow on the first pass.
Serrated edges offer a more aggressive cut that easily breaks through the ice and compacted snow. These blades are identifiable by the square or trapezoid blocks that look like teeth on the front of the blade.
The Sabre Blade is the new standard for front mount and underbody blades on snow plows. This carbide snow plow blade features a fully welded hardox plate for extra protection of the carbide insert. The blade is available with a standard carbide insert or extra tall carbide insert for increased wear and blade life.
